25 Walnut Street

History

A vernacular Greek Revival home with references to the Italianate style, most notably in the low-pitched roof and cupola.

This house was most likely built between 1851 and 1861. The central bay of the 5-bay facade projects a porch supported by polygonal Doric columns. The front entrance is framed with transom and sidelights.

The earliest known owner was Stephen Moody Pillsbury, Sr. (1826–1905), a clerk and trader who owned land around Newburyport and a direct descendant of William Pillsbury, one of the first settlers of Newbury. In the early 20th century, William H. Kingsbury lived here; he worked at the nearby Towle Manufacturing silver company.
