6 Auburn Street

History

This building is clearly Federal in style, three stories in height, with a hipped roof and decreasing window size in the upper floors. The building has simple cornice moulding and window lintels. The most interesting feature of the house is the front entrance, which is flanked by classical pilasters supporting an entablature above.

Although this house was built at the turn of the nineteenth century, the early owners of this house have yet to be documented. The 1851 Map of Newburyport notes the owner as J. Huse. Huse is not listed in the City Directory for that year.

Later, Benjamin Greeley was the owner of the house. In 1888, he sold the house to Hannah Lunt. Later owners included Sarah and Georgianna Balch. In 1934, they sold the property to Edward Ayers.
